Wondering where to get started? Purchasing cabinets for your kitchen, bathroom or wherever can seem like a daunting and difficult process but it doesn't have to be.
We've compiled a checklist of questions you will be required to answer. This should help in making the process a little easier and hopefully a little less stressful. This is not an exhaustive list but it will help you understand all the main decisions you are going to have to make. This way, when you setup a consultation with one of our designers you will already be halfway to a beautiful new kitchen.
Lets get started!
(1) Measurements
Measurements are very important in order for us to get started on creating a layout for you. We don't ask for extremely specific sizes. The pertinent information we like to see is as follows; (a) wall-to-wall measurement, (b) wall to center of any windows or appliances (c) window width(s) and (d) ceiling heights.
This information enables us to get started right away on creating a layout and 3D image for you in our cabinet design program. Follow this link to see an example of the measurements we would like to see. Obviously you don't need to draw it up on a computer. Hand drawn is fine.
It is important to note that these measurements are very important if you decide to pickup and install the job yourself as we do not come out to measure. That said, if you decide to have us do the install we will come out to your site to ensure that all measurements are correct.
(2) Pickup vs. Install
First of all you will have to decide whether or not you would like to install the cabinets yourself or if you would like us to do it. This really depends on either how handy you are or if you have someone else that can accomplish this for you. The level of difficulty in cabinet installation depends on many factors.
The HST tax is applicable on both install and pickup orders.
(3) Type of Door
To view a complete list of available styles please Click here. The two basic types of doors are Wood or Non-wood.
If you go with wood you will have to decide (a) the species (ie. Maple, Cherry, Fir, etc...) (b) the style and (c) the finish. We do not have a listing of finishes on our web site. Please visit our showroom for samples.
For non-wood doors it is a matter of choosing (a) the style and (b) the color.
(4) Countertops
First of all it is important to note that if you choose to pick-up and install the cabinets yourself we do not get involved in the countertops.
There are two choices you will have to make regarding countertops. First of all is type. The three basic types are laminate, quartz and granite. Laminate and quartz tops can be ordered through us via Colonial Countertops Although we do not get involved in granite tops we would be more than happy to recommend different suppliers.
The second choice will be colour. We carry sample boards of all the major suppliers in our showroom. If you would like a larger sample please visit Colonial. Included below are links to the web sites the major laminate suppliers.
(5) Hardware
The most important decision regarding hardware will be the choice of your handles. To help make the decision process easier we offer, free of charge, 16 different handles that you can choose from. These are called our Standard Pulls. In case you do not find a handle to your liking on our standard pulls board we also offer several boards of Specialty Pulls. These handles are a $5 upgrade per handle.
By no means are you required to choose from only this selection. We have several handle towers and boards in our showroom that you can choose from. These pulls have a wide price range and will need to be priced individually.
There is also unlimited choices in Other Hardware you can choose from. The previous link lists some of the more popular items that we offer. This includes things like spice racks, garbage cans, recycling centers, wine racks, etc... One of the main suppliers we order this hardware from is Richelieu Hardware. Please feel free to visit their web site. Don't forget to write down the product codes of the items you would like us to price for you.
(6) Other
This section is kind of a catch all in terms of the remaining questions one of our designers will as you. These questions include if you would like (a) light valence, (b) crown moulding (and what type. Click here to see available profiles), (c) drawer type (standard, dovetail or file), (d) cabinet interior (finished or not) and (e) appliance specifications. Appliance specifications are very important. It is not compulsory that you have all specs on your first visit but it will be required prior to ordering.
